Tannin?based bio?adhesives for the wood panel industry as sustainable alternatives to petrochemical resins

The development of natural-based adhesives is a key aspect in reducing the consumption fossil resources, adapting to legislation on use formaldehyde and ensuring sustainability wood panel industry. This study focuses five alternatives for tannin-based (tannin-paraformaldehyde, tannin-glyoxal, tannin-hexamine, tannin non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) with ammonium hydroxide NIPU HDMA bio-adhesives) as potential proposals substitution synthetic currently used: Urea-formaldehyde (UF), Phenol-formaldehyde (PF) melamine urea (MUF). Modeling simulation tools were used conceptual design reaction stage bio-adhesives due lack real data from industrial scale production systems. life cycle assessment methodology was identify environmental impacts associated processes these bio-adhesives. results obtained showed that bio-adhesive has best profile, although other alternative also show good profiles compared adhesives. Sensitivity analyses have been carried out after evaluating main hot spots processes. In all them, reductions observed, replacement DMC by EC reduction energy being options greatest improvements.
